The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) owns its establishment to the far-sighted philanthropic vision of Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, who was unparalleled in his support of higher education. He famously advanced the idea of lifting up the “best and the most gifted”, so as to make them of the greatest service to the country, in order for the nation and community to truly advance. It was his vision and philanthropy that led to the founding of IISc in 1909.
Over the last century, the institute has played a crucial role in nation-building. In 2018, IISc was selected as an institute of Eminence (IoE) by the Government of India, and it constantly figures among the top Indian institutions in the World University rankings. According to QS World University ranking 2022, IISc has secured top place in the world in terms of its research impact i.e. the citations per faculty metric.
